Are you planning major renovations and hesitating between an architect and an interior architect? The distinction is easy to remember. The architect modifies the structural envelope of the building, its load-bearing walls, and its facade. The interior architect designs living spaces, optimizes volumes, and designs custom furniture within the existing structure. Often, the two complement each other on the same project. This article details their roles so you can entrust each task to the right expert.

The architect thinks of the building as a whole. They design the structure, facades, openings, and extensions. Their work impacts the solidity of the structure.

They master urban planning regulations and the preparation of building permits. For a new project or a vertical extension, their signature is often mandatory. They also coordinate the structural work.

Their ten-year liability insurance covers construction-related damage. This guarantee protects the project owner for ten years after the work is accepted.

The interior architect transforms the interior without altering the heavy structure. They redistribute rooms, manage natural light, and improve circulation. Their playground is the space lived in on a daily basis.

The focus is on the actual use by the inhabitants.

This professional designs custom kitchens, master suites, and walk-in closets. Theoptimization of volumes and spaces is at the core of their profession. Moreover, the French Council of Interior Architects recalls the skills of the interior architect in designing functional spaces.

The two professions fall under different frameworks. The title of architect is protected by the 1977 law, and practicing requires registration with the Order. That of interior architect is not regulated in the same way.

Insurance also differs. The architect carries a ten-year structural guarantee. The interior architect has insurance for their intellectual design activity and professional civil liability. The insurance obligations of construction professionals clarify these distinctions.

This difference has concrete consequences. It defines who is liable for what in the event of an incident on the construction site.

The choice depends on the extent of the work. For a project affecting the structure, the architect becomes essential. To rethink the usage without breaking the envelope, the interior architect leads the project.

Here is a useful professional tip. During a renovation involving the demolition of a load-bearing wall, the interior architect designs the new space at the preliminary design stage. They then rely on the calculations of a structural engineer or a design office. Finally, a qualified company ensures the execution.

In the PACA region, this strictness is even more essential. The condominium regulations for historic buildings strictly govern any modification affecting the structural integrity of the building. Each structural intervention therefore follows a precise procedure.

Can an interior designer knock down a load-bearing wall?
They design the space after removal, but the removal of the wall relies on a study by a structural engineer and the intervention of a qualified company. They do not perform the load calculations themselves.

Who handles the administrative procedures in a condominium?
Any modification affecting common areas or the structure requires the agreement of the condominium association. The owner submits their request to the property manager, often at a general meeting, before the work begins.

Can the two professionals work together?
Yes, and this is common on complex projects. The architect manages the envelope and the structure, while the interior designer conceives the layout and comfort. Their complementarity secures the result.

The boundary is clear once established. The interior is the realm of the interior designer, who optimizes volumes and uses. The envelope belongs to the architect, who guarantees the structure. An ambitious project often brings both together, each on their own turf, for a solid, functional, and coherent result.

To go further: discover what distinguishes an architect, an interior architect, and a decorator, how to choose between project management and decoration and how much an interior designer costs in Nice in 2026.

Are you planning heavy renovations and hesitating between an architect and an interior architect?
